59-year-old Mechanicsville man killed in Prince George crash
PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 59-year-old Mechanicsville man is dead following a crash in Prince George County on Friday.
At about 6:40 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, officers with the Prince George Police Department responded to the 4500 block of Courtland Road for a collision involving a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado and 2006 Toyota Camry.
Police said a preliminary investigation shows that the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling westbound on Courtland Road when the driver lost control.
The Silverado crossed the centerline of Courtland Road and hit the Camry.
The driver of the Camry, 59-year-old Douglas Smith of Mechanicsville, was pronounced dead at the scene by Prince George Fire/EMS personnel.
The driver of the Silverado was uninjured, according to police.
Police urge drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
According to police, the snowy weather and icy roads are considered contributing factors to the crash.
"No signs of reckless driving or impairment by either operator were apparent at the time of the incident," police wrote in a release.
According to a Dec. 5 social post, Prince George Fire and EMS crews have responded to multiple crashes on Friday morning due to snow and ice on local roads.
"Conditions remain slick, and drivers are strongly urged to stay off the road unless travel is absolutely essential," fire officials wrote in the post.
The Prince George Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the crash.
"The Prince George Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Smith during this difficult time," police wrote.
