62-year-old Wakefield man dead after crashing into trees in Sussex

SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 62-year-old Wakefield man is dead after police say he crashed into multiple trees in Sussex County on Thursday.
At around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, Virginia State Police said troopers were on scene at 9316 Birch Island Road in Sussex County for a deadly single-vehicle crash.
When troopers arrived, they found the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, dead.

According to authorities, an initial investigation reveals that the driver of a 1999 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck -- 62-year-old Charles Lee Mixell -- was traveling northbound on Birch Island Road when he ran off the road and hit multiple trees.
Police said the road was shut down to clear the scene, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) helped to detour drivers off the road.
No additional information is available as of the time of reporting.
