ACC fines UVA for $50,000 after field rush incident that left 19 people injured

CHARLOTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- The Atlantic Coastal Conference (ACC) has fined University if Virginia (UVA) Football team after a field rush that left several injured Friday evening.

On Friday, Sept. 26 "a large number" of spectators rushed onto the UVA's Scott Stadium Field leading law enforcement officers to "[immediately take] action to maintain public safety,” according to a UVA spokesperson.

In 8News previous coverage it was reported that 19 people were treated for injuries after a field rush altercation that broke out after UVA's win over Florida State.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, the ACC has announced that they will fine UVA for a "violation of the league’s event security policy following its football game versus Florida State University on September 26."

A spokesperson with UVA described the incident to 8News as “isolated incident” that was “promptly addressed to ensure the safety of all attendees.”

In accordance with the new ACC policy, UVA will incur a fine of $50, 000 for the first offense.

The updated security policy was announced in July of 2025 during ACC Football Kickoff and applies to football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball for the 2025-26 academic year.

The goal of the policy according to the ACC is "to enhance the safety and well-being o the Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes  2025-26 academic year."

The new policy will limit access to the competitions area in men's and women's basketball. In the policy the availability status of student-athletes will be reported before each conference game in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, and football.

“Our enhanced health and safety initiatives reflect our continued responsibility to lead with integrity, prioritize the well-being of our programs and fans, and modernize our operations to meet the evolving needs of today’s collegiate landscape,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D.

UVA defeated Florida State with a score of 46-38 on Friday, Sept. 26 at their home stadium.
