‘Best race I’ve done by far’: Richmond Marathon runners say they’ll run RVA again

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Going for gold, over 21,000 runners filled the River City streets Saturday morning for this year's Allianz Richmond Marathon, CarMax Half Marathon and VCU Health Richmond 8K.

Preparations and early mornings for training did not deter the thousands of runners navigating through downtown Richmond and beyond on Saturday, Nov. 15. 8News spoke to some racegoers, who were drinking up the excitement of such a big race day.

"I wanted to challenge myself, and since I started running, it's made my life better," said Chesterfield County runner Brian Stonerook. "I'm going for a full!"

All three events were sold out on Saturday, including the 48th running of "America's Friendliest Marathon," which kicked off at First and Broad Streets downtown.

Friends and family waited anxiously to see their runner and waved signs in support.

"It says, 'Katie, hurry to the finish! Mango misses you!' That's her dog," said Natalie Wolpert, pointing at her homemade sign. "So, yay Katie!"

Downtown Richmond is just one of the many regions runners fly past. Marathoners explored The Fan, crossed the James River and ran through Stratford Hills and Woodland Heights. Half-marathon runners also started at First and Broad, then steered to Bryan Park.

Both groups met again in the Northside and ran south, where they were relieved to cross the finish line near Brown's Island.

"It was awesome -- lots of people were supporting with signs," said Connie Duncan, a runner from North Carolina.

"Best race I've done by far -- so awesome, great environment," said Mathew Cash, another runner from North Carolina. "Definitely recommend running Richmond. Richmond is awesome."

Whether it's the city rallying support for runners or always having familiar faces and family lending smiles and pats on the back at the end, those coming from near and far say they'll be back to run in Richmond again.

"We're planning on coming back next year," Duncan said.

Preparations for the 2026 marathon, half-marathon and 8K have already begun. Those interested in running next year can snag their spot starting on Sunday, Nov. 16. Learn more here.
