Celebrate anniversary of Stonewall Uprising with parade, festivities in Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Celebrate the anniversary of an important moment in LGBTQ+ history with a parade and celebratory gathering in Richmond's Woodland Heights on Saturday.
The Stonewall Uprising in 1969 is thought to be what sparked the broader movement for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States.
From 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, "Stonewall on Stonewall" will take over the Woodland Heights neighborhood to celebrate the 55th anniversary of said uprising.
The festival will begin at the intersection of W. 28th and Stonewall streets -- with the latter street playing into the chosen name for the event.
The schedule for "Stonewall on Stonewall" is as follows:
- 4 p.m. Saturday: Event begins at W. 28th and Stonewall streets
- 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday: Commorative parade from W. 28th Street to W. 34th Street
- 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday: Festivities at W. 28th and Stonewall streets
Those festivities are set to include food and drinks, music, historical information and games. Stonewall Street will also be decorated with rainbow decorations.
This isn't the first-ever "Stonewall on Stonewall," according to organizers, who said Woodland Heights neighbors first threw this commemorative celebration years ago.
"Let’s make 'Stonewall on Stonewall' happen again! Join us in June and bring this incredible event back to life," organizers said.
