Central Virginia ICE detention center is over capacity
CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- One of Virginia's two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities is over capacity, while the other is getting very close, according to the most recent data from ICE and TRAC Immigration.
Virginia has two formal ICE detention centers, both located in Central Virginia: the Caroline Detention Center in Caroline County and the Farmville Detention Center in Prince Edward County.
As 8News has previously reported, the total detainee populations of these two facilities have steadily grown since President Donald Trump took office in late January, repeatedly breaking their own records.
However, as of Nov. 28, the Caroline Detention Center has surpassed its maximum capacity -- and the Farmville Detention Center is less than two dozen detainees away from doing the same.
As of Nov. 28, the average daily detainee population of the Caroline Detention Center was 346, according to data compiled by TRAC Immigration. The facility's maximum capacity is set at 336.
At the Farmville Detention Center, as of Nov. 28, the average daily detainee population was 712 -- just 20 shy of its maximum capacity of 732.
TRAC Immigration also lists detainee information for Riverside Regional Jail, a Prince George County facility that entered into an agreement with ICE to house its detainees in May.
Riverside's detainee population has ballooned since September. At that time, it held only an average of 9 detainees on a given day. As of Nov. 28, that average was 94 detainees.
What do we know about these detainees?
ICE’s own data reveals that the majority of the detainees held at Virginia facilities are not considered criminals. A similar number of these detainees have no "ICE Threat Level," which means they have no criminal history.
Notably, most of the detainees held at Riverside are not considered criminals and have no ICE Threat Level.
