Charles City County Public Schools picks new superintendent with 30+ years of experience

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Charles City County Public Schools has named a woman with more than 30 years of experience in public education as the next superintendent.

According to a release shared by the school division on Thursday, June 26, Katina Otey, who currently serves as the chief academic officer for Charlottesville City Public Schools, will be appointed on July 1.

“I am honored to serve the Charles City community as Superintendent,” Dr. Otey said. “Charles City has a rich history and a strong sense of pride. I look forward to working collaboratively with our incredible staff, students, families, and community partners to ensure every student is inspired, supported, and prepared for the future. I’m humbled by the support I’ve received, and I ask all of you to join me in rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on behalf of our scholars. Together, we will build upon the division’s many strengths and continue to more forward with excellence.”

Otey has 31 years of experience in public education, beginning her career as a teacher at Roanoke City Public Schools in 1994.

She has served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in Henrico County Public Schools, as well as Director of Elementary School Leadership for Chesterfield County Public Schools, per the release from the school district.

This news comes after Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) helped in the superintendent search process.

Rodney Tyler, chair of the Charles City County School Board, shared his enthusiasm over the newest addition to the school division, coming this summer.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Otey to Charles City County Public Schools. She is a visionary leader who brings integrity, passion, and deep instructional expertise to this role. Her extensive leadership experience across diverse educational settings, combined with a proven track record of fostering excellence and driving innovation, makes her an excellent match for our division and community,” Tyler said.

According to the school district, Otey earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University (VDU) and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Virginia Tech.
