Charlottesville man accused of drunk hit-and-run, resisting arrest

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Charlottesville man is facing several charges after police say he drank while driving, was involved in a hit-and-run, lied to officers and then resisted arrest, resulting in his being tased.

At 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, Albemarle County dispatchers received a 911 call about a possible hit-and-run. According to the caller, an involved driver fled the scene of a crash, moving toward the 400 block of Woodbrook Drive.

An officer with the Albemarle County Police Department responded to the area and found the hit-and-run suspect, a 36-year-old Charlottesville man, in the parking lot of a nearby business.

According to police, the man gave the officer incorrect identifying information about himself. The officer, upon realizing this information was false, tried to take the suspect into custody.

Police claim the man resisted, resulting in a struggle between him and the officer. The officer used a stun gun on the suspect, who then attempted to flee.

The man was soon caught and taken into custody. It was later discovered that he was wanted by Albemarle Police for driving under the influence and a felony probation violation, which police said stemmed from an assault on law enforcement charge.

He now faces the following charges in connection with Thursday's incident:

  • One count of hit-and-run
  • One count of consuming alcohol while driving
  • One count of drunk in public
  • One count of obstruction of justice
  • Two counts of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon

"Multiple suspected narcotics" were also found during the incident, police said. Pending further investigation and lab results, more charges could be filed.
