Chesterfield leaders appoint interim Dale District supervisor

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield County leaders announced on Wednesday that they would honor one of longtime leader James Holland's last wishes and appoint LeQuan M. Hylton as the Dale District's interim supervisor.

Per the release, the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors voted on Wednesday, Nov. 12 to appoint Hylton — a veteran and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve — to the board.

Hylton's appointment comes after Chesterfield lost Holland in October amid a battle with cancer. Holland served the county for more than 17 years as the Dale District's supervisor — a post he had held since 2008.

Per a press release from the county, one of Holland's last wishes before he died was for the board to select Hylton to serve as interim supervisor. The pair had "worked closely together" since Hylton was appointed to the county's planning commission to represent the Dale District in 2019.

"Mr. Holland was a great mentor of mine [who] taught me a lot about public policy and public service through his actions and his words," Hylton said. "I'm going to continue the legacy."

According to the release, Hylton will serve until the board holds a special election in November 2026 to determine Holland's permanent successor. The successor will then fulfill the remainder of Holland's four-year term, which ends on Dec. 21, 2027.

Hylton said the board will also announce an appointment for the vacant planning commissioner seat he previously held in the coming days as they're currently assessing applicants.

Hylton has been a Chesterfield resident since 1998 and graduated from Manchester High School, according to the county. He is an alumnus of Virginia State University as well as Averett University and holds a doctorate in public policy and administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
