Chesterfield School Board to vote on transgender student policy
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County School Board will make a decision on transgender student policies on Tuesday, Dec. 10. This comes after the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) adopted Governor Glenn Youngkin’s (R) model earlier this year. The VDOE policy requires schools to notify a student’s parents if they want to go by a different name or pronouns than what’s on their record, or get counseling on gender identity. The policy also requires students to use locker rooms, bathrooms and play on sports teams that match the sex listed on their record. Governor Youngkin and the VDOE implemented this policy back in July, but Chesterfield County Public Schools has continued to follow its current policy from 2021. The school board will be voting whether to keep the 2021 policy in place, or implement the VDOE's current policy. Many of those in favor of VDOE's current policy have said they it’s a parent’s right for the school to tell them their child wants to go by something different than what’s on their record. But many of those against it said they think it could cause a chilling effect between students and their schools if they know their parent(s) will be notified. It’s important to note that the current policy doesn't require schools to voluntarily tell a parent if their child is going by something different from their record, but parents can contact the school and ask. The meeting is at 6:30p.m. at the Chesterfield County Public Meeting Room, located at 9901 Iron Bridge Road. Nearly 50 people lined up for public comment at the last Chesterfield School Board meeting when they read a draft of this policy.
