Classes and campus activities cancelled at Hampton University due to potential threat

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) -- Hampton University will be closed today and tomorrow due to a potential threat.
The university announced Thursday morning that all campus activities and classes are cancelled on September 11 and 12. Officials encourages all students who live on campus to minimize their movement across campus.

Students who reside off campus should not come to campus at this time.
All non-essential personnel, including faculty and staff were told to evacuate immediately.
School officials say they will provide an update by close of business today after they meet with local officials and state and local law enforcement professionals.
Virginia State University in Petersburg is also closed due to a potential threat.
