Deicing issues slow flights at Richmond International Airport
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Passengers traveling through Richmond International Airport (RIC) faced some delays on Friday morning due to deicing issues amid Central Virginia's first snow of the season.
According to a Dec. 5 social post from RIC, many airlines faced delays as deicing contractors work through increased demand and equipment disruptions.
"Delays were not experienced by all airlines at RIC," an RIC spokesperson told 8News. "The de-icing delays have cleared, according to RIC Operations."
Though RIC does not have specific deicing-related delays, the spokesperson confirmed that more than one airline experienced delays.
"RIC is in continuous communication with the airlines and their contractors to help improve the pace of operations," RIC wrote in the post.
The snow, which fell throughout the early morning hours on Friday, Dec. 5, led to 214 crashes throughout the Commonwealth -- with 73 taking place in just four hours -- according to Virginia State Police.
Numerous flights were delayed for several hours, according to the airport's website.
RIC reportedly showed two cancellations out of 171 scheduled flights for the day and six delays with over an hour wait time, though the causes of those delays are unknown, the spokesperson said.
