Driver charged with involuntary manslaughter, DUI after Hanover man killed in crash
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver is now facing several charges, including involuntary manslaughter, after a deadly crash in Hanover County this past December.
At about 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office were called to the 6200 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike for report of a crash.
According to authorities, 53-year-old David Murray Edquest, of no known address, was moving west in a 2019 Ford Edge at a high rate of speed when he collided with a 2007 Dodge Ram.
That truck, occupied by an unidentified female driver and 54-year-old Teddy Randall Barton of Hanover County, was trying to turn into Sam's Express Car Wash from the eastbound side of the road at the time of impact.

Authorities said Barton was ejected from the truck. He and the Ram's driver were both seriously injured and taken to a local hospital, where Barton died three weeks later, on Jan. 12.
The Ram's driver, who authorities said may have had a broken pelvis as a result of the crash, is believed to have since recovered and left the hospital.
Edquest had minor injuries and was also hospitalized for treatment. He has since been charged with one count of driving while intoxicated (DUI), two counts of maiming as the result of DUI and one count of involuntary manslaughter.
8News previously reported that the Hanover County Sheriff's Office was searching for anyone who may have seen this crash happen. According to a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, two witnesses have since come forward as of Feb. 6.

In that previous reporting, 8News did not include Edquest's name because it was not provided by authorities. In this Feb. 6 update, the spokesperson clarified that withholding his name from the public was not intentional. Authorities were more focused on notifying the public about Barton's death and the search for witnesses at the time of the initial release.
This remains an ongoing investigation.
