Driver dead after large tree falls on truck on I-64 in Goochland

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver is dead after a large tree fell onto his tractor-trailer Tuesday afternoon in Goochland County.

At about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, Virginia State Police (VSP) were called to Interstate 64 East near Route 623 for a reported crash.

State troopers found that a large tree had fallen onto a tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane. Officials said the tree, which hit the cab of the truck, caused it to run off the side of the highway.

State troopers found a man -- the driver of the truck, who has been identified as 51-year-old Frank James Porter-Loftin of Amelia County -- dead. After what VSP called "striking debris" from the incident, another vehicle was also disabled.

As of the time of reporting, the right travel lane is still blocked as crews are working to remove the truck, and both VSP and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are working together to divert drivers from Exit 167. However, traffic is allowed to pass in the left lane.

VSP is continuing to investigate the cause of this incident.
