First female Richmond Marathon announcer gives advice to runners before race day
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Marathon’s first-ever female announcer, who is an experienced marathoner herself, spoke to 8News to give advice to runners before race day. Lindsey Hein hosts a podcast called "I’ll Have Another," which features laid-back conversations with members from the running community. In 2023, she became the first female announcer for the Richmond Marathon. “I pitched myself to Richmond,” Hein said. “I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, and I was looking for opportunities at races that are within driving distance so that I don't have to be away from my family for extended periods of time. I just pitched myself to the Richmond team and shared about my podcast, shared about all the live interviews I've done and the work I've done in the running community.” This year, the 17-time marathon runner who has run in the Boston Marathon and a half IronMan will be cheering from the sidelines for the start and finish hype team. She gave advice to first time marathon runners looking to achieve their race goals. “Eat early and often,” Hein said. “Don't get to an hour and be like, ‘Oh no, I forgot to take in my nutrition,’ because you're probably not going to feel hungry when you take your first bit of nutrition.” Hein also suggested taking a relaxed approach when running the first set of miles. “The first half of the marathon should feel comfortable, all relaxed,” Hein said. “When you get to mile 16,17, if you feel like I can start really picking it up now, that's the time to go for it.” She also stressed the importance of having fun. “Soak in the atmosphere and give it all you got in the last 10K,” Hein said. “Work hard, because you're never going to regret how you can define the kind of person you are when you know that you've pushed yourself to your limits.” Hein will also be leading an inspiring panel at the Health & Fitness Expo called "What Running Did For Me," featuring notable Richmond runners Kleigh Koupal from Effect Run Club, Josh Leidy 804 Run Club, Anthony Clary from We Off The Couch and Sue Henneberry from Sportable. The panel will take place on Friday Nov. 15 at 12:30 p.m. at Richmond Raceway.
