Former Henrico NICU nurse now faces 12 charges after babies found injured
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The trial dates have been set as Erin Strotman, a former nurse at Henrico Doctors' Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), faces six additional charges -- bringing her total charges to 12 -- in relation to hurting several babies from 2022 to 2024.
In a status hearing held on Tuesday, April 22, Strotman's trial was set for a two-week period starting on Feb. 9, 2026 until Feb. 20, 2026. Additionally, Strotman waived her right to be tried by a jury, opting for a bench trial where the judge will solely decide the outcome.
This decision comes after Strotman was facing eight charges in connection to injuries found on several babies in 2024.
During the Tuesday status hearing, Strotman's defense team and Commonwealth attorneys stated there will be additional charges against Strotman concerning injured babies from 2022 through 2024.
The initial six charges Strotman was facing include:
- Abusing a child to cause serious injury and malicious wounding on Oct. 29, 2024
- Two counts of abusing a child to cause serious injury, abusing a child with disregard for their life and two counts of malicious wounding on Nov. 10, 2024
- Abusing a child with disregard for their life on Nov. 13, 2024
8News spoke with Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor, and she described the additional six charges as follows:
- Three counts of malicious wounding
- Three counts of Class 4 child abuse
While Strotman has been charged with harming five babies, there are now a total of nine babies involved in the investigation, as Taylor said that a ninth baby -- believed to be harmed in 2022 -- was discovered through gathering information and evidence from family members and medical records.
Strotman's next court appearance to discuss the additional charges is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23 at 8:45 a.m.
Prior to Tuesday's court appearance, changes were made to Strotman's bond in late March, allowing her to make phone calls and in-person meetings with her boyfriend. Strotman is also now required to be screened for non-prescription drugs regularly.
