Former NICU nurse charged with child abuse appears in Henrico court Wednesday, attempts to appeal bond for second time
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The former Henrico Doctors’ Hospital nurse at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) will be in court Wednesday morning. Erin Strotman of Chesterfield County was charged with malicious wounding and child abuse after an investigation into babies’ “unexplainable fractures.” The 26-year-old will be appealing her bond for the second time. She’s been in custody at the Henrico County Jail and was denied bond for the first time on Jan. 13. Strotman has been charged in connection to a five-month-old baby boy found with a fractured left femur, fractured right tibia and multiple rib fractures. Court documents describe surveillance video of Strotman allegedly placing pressure and weight onto the baby’s legs and pushing the baby’s legs backward to his head on Nov. 10. The baby reportedly appeared to be crying in distress. This comes after the hospital said three babies were found with “unexplainable fractures” in late 2024, and four babies in 2023. Henrico County Commonwealth’s attorney Shannon Taylor confirmed Strotman was employed by the hospital at these times, and 8News obtained a report from the Virginia Child Protective Services confirming Strotman was placed on paid administrative leave in 2023. ALL COVERAGE: Babies injured, abused at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital’s NICU In her first bond appeal hearing, Strotman’s court-appointed attorney argued that she is not a threat to herself or the community, and that her bond should be accepted. However, the court denied the bond on Jan. 13, citing she is a danger to children. If the bond is approved in her second attempt, Strotman could receive protection from police in order to ensure her safety. Henrico Doctors' Hospital is still not accepting any additional babies to the NICU and is "working actively to determine how these fractures occurred."
