Hanover appoints first director of tourism
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County has named a woman with nearly a decade of related experience as its first director of tourism.
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, the county announced Rachel Smith will be the first director of tourism, launching a new initiative to promote events and visitor experiences.
“Tourism is a key driver for economic vitality and Rachel’s energy, vision and proven ability to create memorable experiences make her the perfect choice to lead this effort,” said County Administrator John A. Budesky. “She understands how to tell a community’s story in a way that attracts visitors, strengthens local pride and supports our businesses.”
Smith has nearly a decade of leadership experience in parks, recreation, tourism initiatives and more.

She served as a deputy director for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation, where she oversaw more than 500 annual programs, nine special events and a multimillion-dollar budget, and also was the operations manager for James City County Parks and Recreation, according to the county.
Smith will reportedly lead the county's efforts to "enhance tourism marketing and develop visitor experiences," and work with local businesses and attractions, per county officials.
Hanover said Smith has a master's degree in business administration from Western Governors University and an undergraduate degree in psychology/sociology and criminal justice from Liberty University.
She has earned multiple awards, including the National Recreation and Park Association’s “30 Under 30” award and Virginia Recreation and Park Society’s “Outstanding New Professional” award.
Smith will officially assume her role on Monday, Sept. 1.
