Head Start will continue at Powhatan Public Schools, despite prior announcement

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- After previously announcing that it would no longer offer Head Start during the upcoming school year, Powhatan County Public Schools has issued an update, saying the program will instead continue.

The school district had announced that, following Richmond Public Schools' recent choice to reduce allocations in its Head Start program, it would be ending this early education program for the 2025-26 school year.

In an updated press release issued the evening of Friday, April 24, the school district said this would no longer be the case.

"Following new information provided about a vote taken this week by the Head Start Policy Council, PCPS has been informed that its 17 Head Start seats will remain in place for the upcoming school year," the school district said. "This decision updates earlier communications we shared, which were based on the information available to us at the time regarding regional seat reductions."
