Help name the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s new opossum
WAYNESBORO, Va. (WRIC) -- The Wildlife Center of Virginia is asking for help to name the new male opossum that has joined their ambassador team. The opossum arrived at the center in October 2024, and was officially trained and added to the center's permits as an education ambassador in January. Unfortunately, before his time at the center he was kept illegally as a pet, which makes it unlikely for him to return to the wild due to his time spent with humans. Despite some minor health issues caused by a previously improper diet, he's in good shape and settled in relatively quickly at the center. The only thing he needs now is a name! You have three options, as described by the center: Powhatan -- a tribute to the native people that inspired one of the common names for this species Cosmos -- a reference to the night sky and the fact that opossums are nocturnal Mars -- a shortened version of marsupial For more information about the opossum and the reasonings behind his name choices, click here.
