Henrico actor turned Broadway sensation inspires local theater students
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- From Henrico’s West End to Midtown Manhattan, a homegrown entertainer has become a Broadway sensation, and now he’s giving back.
Jake David Smith came to town this week to work with a group of students who aspire to reach the likes of Broadway.
He held an interactive workshop with students at Henrico County’s Passion Academy. Students listened intently to Smith, who now plays Marius in the long-time hit show, "Les Misérables," because he once sat where they sit.

“I worked on all of my college material in this building,” Smith said. “So, it's super surreal to be back here teaching in -- what's the cheesy analogy -- your actor's toolbox.”
Smith graduated from Godwin High School in 2015 and went on to attend Elon University. Within hours of graduating from college, he headed to Broadway, where he’d scored a job in Disney's "Frozen" as an understudy for the character, Hans.
For the past two years, he’s been touring with his principle role in "Les Misérables."
“I love performing, but there's something that makes it even more enjoyable to perform,” Smith said. “To see other kids learning to love this art form the way that I love it so much.

Smith emphasized the importance of the youth in theater.
“Theater is nothing without young people,” Smith said. “Young people drive and evolve and change this art form for the better.”

He further explained his path to the role, adding that he hopes to encourage others to pursue their passions.
“And I had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way, so if I can make it easier for somebody else, I’m very happy to," Smith said.
Smith said he performs eight times a week in his role as Marius. Currently, the show is playing at the Kennedy Center for the next four weeks. It will be making a stop in Richmond later this year.
