Henrico confirms first rabies case of 2026 after raccoon tests positive

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Henrico County on Friday, marking the county's first rabies case of 2026.

According to the Henrico County Police Division, officers responded to the 5200 block of W. Grace Street in the Brookland area of Henrico on Friday, Jan. 6, for a report of a potential rabies exposure involving two dogs and a raccoon.

Police said the raccoon tested positive for rabies. The dogs will be quarantined on the owner's property due to potential contact between the dogs and the racoon.

No additional animal or human exposures were reported, according to police.

This is the first confirmed case of rabies in the county so far this year.

"The Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit reminds everyone to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current to ensure the safety of their pets and our community," police wrote in a press release. "Henrico County offers rabies vaccination clinics throughout the year."
