Henrico confirms fourth rabies case of 2026 after raccoon tests positive

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Henrico County Police Division has confirmed the fourth case of rabies in the county in 2026 after a raccoon tested positive in late February.

On Thursday, Feb. 26, officers with the Henrico County Police Division responded to the 2600 block of Skeet Street for a report of a potential rabies exposure involving dogs and a raccoon, per a March 3 press release.

Police said the raccoon was submitted to the State Lab and tested positive for rabies.

The dogs will be quarantined on the owner's property due to the potential contact between three dogs and the raccoon.

“There were no additional animal or human exposures reported,” officers wrote in the release.

The police division shared the following dates for clinics this year:

  • From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Eastern Henrico Government Center, located at 3820 Nine Mile Road
  • From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Western Henrico Government Center, located at 4301 E. Parham Road

Anyone who sees abnormal wildlife behavior or notices any possible rabies exposures is urged to contact the Henrico County Police Division at 804-501-5000.
