HenricoNEXT holds community meeting on proposed land use map for 2045

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Residents now have the opportunity to provide feedback on a proposed land use map and shape Henrico's agricultural future in the next phase of a major community planning effort spanning several years.

HenricoNEXT is a comprehensive plan that looks to define goals and priorities for the county by 2045. Now in its latest phase, residents can join Henrico leaders between 6 and 8 p.m. on Monday, March 9, at Henrico Theatre, 305 East Nine Mile Road, to discuss proposed future land use in the county.

Following a series of HenricoNEXT's spring suggestion sessions last year, county leaders released the Draft 2045 Land Use Map reflecting several priorities residents identified in their input, including a proposed land use designation, "Prime Agriculture/Rural Conservation."

Land development in areas under the new classification "should be limited to that allowed by a property's existing zoning and should consist of agriculture, agricultural support uses, and residential uses on large lots," per the county. The designation seeks to promote historic and rural patterns, limit public sewer and water extensions and encourage private conservation of land, among other priorities.

Residents will have a chance to see an overview of the draft plan, provide feedback in real time and ask questions at the March 9 meeting.

During HenricoNEXT's first two phases, launched in September 2022 and March 2025, Henrico leaders received input from residents about launching and updating a project website, tabulating and publishing responses to surveys and holding in-person workshops and sessions.
