Hurricane Erin becomes first hurricane of 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- We have our First Hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season officially, with Hurricane Erin, as of Friday morning.
As of an advisory from the National Hurricane Center at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, Erin has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and is moving off to the west-northwest at 18 mph.
On the forecast track, from the National Hurricane Center, this tropical system is continuing to push off to the west-northwest and will continue strengthening into a Major Hurricane by Saturday night.
No direct impacts to Central Virginia are expected but folks heading out to Virginia Beach and Sandbridge Beach next week could be running into dangerous surf and dangerous rip currents.
