Inmate dies after ‘apparent attack’ by another inmate at Greensville Correctional Center
GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- An inmate is dead following what the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) said was an, "apparent attack" by the inmate's cell partner at the Greensville Correctional Center Tuesday morning.
VADOC said the incident occurred at 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, after a corrections team member called for assistance from a corrections supervisor.
One inmate was reportedly found on top of their cell partner, who was unresponsive.
Corrections team members attempted to give life-saving measures to the unresponsive inmate until first responders arrived to the scene to take over.
The inmate was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. by a doctor. A VADOC spokesperson said the attack was an "isolated incident."
"Greensville Correctional Center is secure and there is no active threat to corrections team members or the inmate population," the spokesperson said.
The VADOC’s Office of Law Enforcement Services continues to investigate.
The attack follows a fight in September at the Greensville prison that left three people hospitalized.
