Interim U.S. Attorney for Eastern District of Virginia sworn in
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- On Tuesday, Erik Siebert was sworn in as the interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). His appointment on Tuesday, Jan. 21, comes after his predecessor, Jessica D. Aber, announced her resignation on Friday, Jan. 17. In the role of interim U.S. Attorney, Siebert will supervise the prosecution of federal crimes and take legal action on all civil matters in EDVA that have the interest of the United States. He will lead a team of approximately 300 prosecutors, civil litigators and support personnel in four divisions -- those being Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk and Newport News -- that serve over six million residents. Siebert began his commitment to the EDVA in 2010 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. In that role, he handled a range of cases related to violent crimes, drug trafficking, illegal possessions and trafficking of firearms, fraud, child sexual exploitation, illegal immigration and public corruption offenses. He has also received several awards for his prosecutions. Additionally, Siebert has served as the Lead Task Force Attorney for the EDVA's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). From 2019 to 2024, Siebert was the Deputy Criminal Supervisor for the Richmond Division of EDVA. Before joining the DOJ, Siebert was a police officer at the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. from 2002 to 2006. He also served as a law clerk for Judge Henry E. Hudson on the U.S. District Court for EDVA from 2009 to 2010. Siebert received his J.D. from the University of Richmond's Law School in 2009 and his B.A. from Virginia Military Institute in 2001.
