J.R. Tucker High School student detained by ICE after appearing in court for traffic incident

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A J.R. Tucker High School student has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after attending a court appearance at the Henrico County Courthouse.

First reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, 18-year-old Arman Momand, of Afghanistan, was detained by ICE after appearing at the Henrico County Courthouse on Friday, Aug. 8, according to the Henrico County Sheriff's Office.

During Momand's court appearance, he was found guilty of two misdemeanors: disorderly conduct and speeding 20 mph or more above the speed limit, after a traffic stop and police pursuit that occurred on Dec. 6, 2024.

Momand did not receive a jail sentence. Despite this, Momand was taken into custody by ICE and initially taken to Riverside Regional Jail, which has an agreement with ICE to temporarily keep the agency's detainees.

After staying there overnight, Momand was then moved to the Farmville Detention Center, where he remains, as of reporting, according to ICE's records.

A spokesperson for Henrico County Public Schools confirmed Momand is a student at J.R. Tucker High School.

Momand's detainment comes after similar instances at the Chesterfield County Courthouse, where at least 16 people were detained by ICE after appearing in court. Most appeared for traffic infractions.
