Legendary rapper MC Lyte to perform in Richmond while uplifting local artists

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Legendary rapper MC Lyte will be performing in Richmond in February, featuring Alexander Mack, tunes by DJ Lonnie and more. MC Lyte will be performing as part of her 1 of 1 Tour at Ember Music Hall in Richmond on Sunday, Feb. 16, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the show beginning at 8 p.m. Ahead of the performance, 8News Anchor Autumn Childress spoke with MC Lyte. In the studio on Wednesday, Jan. 15, both Childress and Anchor Delaney Hall had the chance to talk with Will Keck of Ember Music Hall and opener Alexander Mack. As for what attendees can expect, Keck said there's a bunch of talent on the lineup. "I'm the owner of the MSQ shop, and we run the hip-hop and R&B division at Ember Music Hall, and we're bringing out the legend: MC Lyte on February 16th," Keck said. "We'll have DJ Lonnie B DJ-ing, we got Mike Street, the legend, hosting, and we got Cakess and my man right here, Alexander Mack opening." Mack said the chance to open for a music artist of such magnitude means so much, as MC Lyte is a big inspiration for him. "The opportunity to open up for a generational artist that's pioneered the biggest genre in the world is an honor within itself," Mack said. "She embodies everything that hip-hop is, which is positivity, education, self-confidence, everything that my music stands for. And she's paved the way for artists like me to keep on and keep spreading the message, so I'm very, very honored." Speaking of MC Lyte's positive message, she said that throughout her 1 of 1 Tour, she uplifts a local artist who will open for her during what she refers to as a "lift up cypher," which she explained further to Childress. "We mean lifting someone's spirit up with what it is that you're speaking into them," MC Lyte said. "So, we're asking people to come speak life into their 16 bars, to uplift, to motivate." For those that may not know what a cypher is as it pertains to rap, Keck explained its meaning. "A cypher is a group of people getting together and freely flowing," Keck said. "There's no format to it, no restrictions to it. Typically, it's a flex of the skills, of the ability to rap, whether it be wordplay, flows, stuff like that. In this particular instance, she wants something that's positive, something that's uplifting." To learn more about the cypher and learn the rules, visit MC Lyte's Instagram page. Three winners who are picked will perform before she goes on stage. To grab your tickets, visit Ember Music Hall's website.
