Lifelong Richmonder headed to World Triathlon Championship finals in Australia
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- One Richmond athlete is headed to the other side of the world to compete at this years World Triathlon Championship finals in Wollongong, Australia.
Seventy-six-year-old Suzanne McWilliams began her triathlon journey ten years ago after she retired and became an instructor at SwimRVA.
After joining the team, executive Adam Kennedy challenged her and staff members to compete in a 2014 triathlon.

Since McWilliams' first triathlon, she has competed in six Ironman races.
"Her journey shows people of all ages that it’s never too late to set new goals, push yourself and celebrate the power of community through physical fitness," Kennedy said.
McWilliams has always had an affinity for competition and physical fitness, from her time competing in team sports in high school to teaching P.E. at Richmond Public Schools.
The championship finals will take place on Oct. 15 and as part of her journey there, the 76-year-old is fundraising to support SwimRVA's Learn to Swim initiative -- in which she is nearly halfway in achieving.

The program will provide second graders in Richmond the chance to visit pools during school for free 45-minute swim lessons over seven weeks.
After several months of training, McWilliams will leave for the race in early October.
"Suzanne is a shining example of how dedication and joy for swimming can inspire others," Kennedy said.
SwimRVA will also have updates on her race available on its website and social media pages.
