LIST: Celebrate America’s 250th with these events in Hanover

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — From a sheep and wool festival to beer drinking and historical demonstrations, there are a couple of ways you can celebrate America's 250th birthday in Hanover County this year.

The county is holding several events over the next few months to commemorate 250 years of America in Virginia. Keep scrolling to see the events between March and May.

Book Talk with Bert Dunkerly

Historian and author Robert M. Dunkerly will present his book, "An Explorer's Guide to America's Revolutionary War," for those interested in traveling and sightseeing.

Participants can learn about revolutionary towns, battlefields and landmarks that were impacted by the revolution, and more.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 7, from 6 to 8 p.m, at Patrick Henry's Scotchtown, 16120 Chiswell Lane. Tickets are $10 for Preservation Virginia members and $15 for general admission.

Scotchtown's 5th Annual Fiber Festival

The festival celebrating spring, shearing of the sheep and fiber production returns on Saturday, April 11, for its fifth year. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Patrick Henry's Scotchtown, participants can learn about the process of shearing and preparing the fleece for dying and spinning, organizers said.

There will be local crafters and vendors, food trucks and other activities for community members to enjoy throughout the day. Members from the Clothos Handspinners Guild and the Louisa County Heritage Society will be on-site to demonstrate the process of wool production.

General admission tickets are $10 and include the open-house tour and fiber festival programs. Tickets for students and Preservation Virginia members are $5. Children 12 and under can attend for free. For more information, visit Scotchtown's 5th Annual Fiber Festival.

Book Talk with Joe Gorman

Local social studies teacher and author Joe Gorman will present his new book, "African Americans of Hanover County, Virginia," which celebrates the rich history and heritage of African Americans in the county.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 6 to 8 p.m, at Patrick Henry's Scotchtown. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for Preservation Virginia members.

History & Hops

Community members will have the chance to engage with historians and reenactors with their favorite beer in hand at History & Hops. The event also features a variety of demonstrations and marks Virginia's independence from the United Kingdom on May 15, 1776.

History & Hops will take place on Saturday, May 16, between 2 and 6 p.m. at the Historic Hanover Courthouse Green, 7496 County Complex Road.
