LIST: Coldest and hottest springs ever recorded in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- When you think of spring, you probably think of the frost melting away and leaving behind a few months of comfortable warmth before the heat of summer hits. These 20 Richmond springs were anything but typical, clocking in as the 10 coldest and 10 hottest on record.

StormTracker8 meteorologist Matt DiNardo pulled historical weather data for the city of Richmond to examine which springs were the warmest and which were the chilliest.

Notably, weather seasons are different from calendar ones. In this context, spring is defined as the months of March, April and May.

LIST: Richmond’s top 10 wettest springs on record

At first glance, the temperatures listed below may not seem that extreme. However, as StormTracker8 chief meteorologist John Bernier explained, that's because they reflect the average temperature across all ninety or so days of spring in each year.

1. 1931 -- 53 degrees Fahrenheit on average
2. 1940 -- 53.6 degrees Fahrenheit on average
3. 1932 -- 53.8 degrees Fahrenheit on average
4. 1924 -- 54.1 degrees Fahrenheit on average
5. 1960 -- 54.15 degrees Fahrenheit on average
6. 1971 -- 54.2 degrees Fahrenheit on average
7. 1885 -- 54.35 degrees Fahrenheit on average
8. 1926 -- 54.4 degrees Fahrenheit on average
9. 1966 -- 54.42 degrees Fahrenheit on average
10. 1950 -- 54.7 degrees Fahrenheit on average

The year of the second-coldest Richmond spring, 1940, also happens to be Richmond's coldest year on record.

2. 2024 -- 61.5 degrees Fahrenheit on average
3. 2010 -- 61.46 degrees Fahrenheit on average

6. 1977 -- 60.99 degrees Fahrenheit on average
7. 2019 -- 60.7 degrees Fahrenheit on average
8. 2004 -- 60.68 degrees Fahrenheit on average
9. 1921 -- 60.3 degrees Fahrenheit on average
10. 1903 -- 60 degrees Fahrenheit on average

The year of the second-hottest Richmond spring, 2024, is also Richmond's hottest year on record.

Additionally, while none of the coldest springs were during the 2000s, half of the hottest springs were -- with that second-place winner only just in the River City's rearview mirror.
