Man allegedly bit Caroline deputy’s thigh resisting arrest over stolen golf cart

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Caroline County deputy is recovering after authorities say a man accused of stealing a golf cart bit said deputy in the thigh, causing a "significant injury."

The morning of Wednesday, Nov. 5, the Caroline County Sheriff's Office received report that a golf cart had been stolen from the local Pendleton Golf Club.

Shortly after the investigation began, the sheriff's office received a second call about a golf cart being driven through the parking lot of a Ladysmith Food Lion.

Investigator S. Owens, who responded to the Ladysmith area after this report, later found a golf cart matching the description of the stolen vehicle parked behind a rental property on Ladysmith Road.

Deputy N. Acasio and Sergeant B. Doucet joined Owens in questioning those who lived in the apartment. According to authorities, during this time, keys that appeared to belong to the stolen golf cart were seen inside said apartment. Owens then left to obtain a search warrant.

As they were "speaking with the occupants and developing cause for arrest," deputies tried to arrest 28-year-old Christian Romero under arrest. Authorities allege that Romero "became combative and violently resisted" arrest.

"During the struggle, Romero is accused of punching and kicking deputies, and at one point biting a deputy in the thigh and refusing to let go, causing a significant injury that required medical attention," the sheriff's office said.

More deputies were called to the scene and Romero was subdued.

"After being placed in a patrol vehicle, Romero continued to thrash and allegedly caused damage to the vehicle's interior," the sheriff's office said.

Romero was ultimately charged with the grand larceny of the golf cart, as well as assault and battery on a law enforcement, obstruction of justice and destruction of property.

He was taken to the Pamunkey Regional Jail, where he was held without bond.

The unidentified injured deputy is expected to recover from their injury, per authorities. The golf cart was returned to the Pendleton Golf Club.
