Man arraigned in Henrico on animal cruelty and fraud charges after alleged scam
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 27-year-old Chesterfield man was arraigned in Henrico County General District Court Tuesday morning for several animal cruelty and fraud charges.
On Tuesday, Feb. 17, Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor announced in an emailed statement that 27-year-old Rodney Travis, Jr., of Chesterfield County, had been arraigned in Henrico County General District Court for the following charges:
- Two counts of class 6 felony animal cruelty, with each count carrying the maximum penalty of five years of incarceration
- One count of class 5 felony computer fraud to obtain money by false pretenses, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of incarceration
- One count of unclassified felony obtaining money by false pretenses, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years of incarceration
Travis is slated to appear in court next for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. on March 26, Taylor said in the statement.
Travis reportedly continues to be held in Henrico County Jail West without bond.
Taylor said the Henrico County Police Division was notified by the Attorney General’s Office and Chesterfield County’s Animal Control Unit of the matter, after which Henrico Police immediately launched an investigation, which led to charges and Travis’ arrest.
Travis' arrest was announced by Henrico Police on Feb. 15. He was initially facing just one charge of animal cruelty.
