POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 20-year-old motorcyclist is dead after police said he collided head-on with a sedan on Butterwood Circle in Powhatan County Sunday afternoon.

At around 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, Virginia State Police troopers responded to a crash in the 500 block of Butterwood Circle in Powhatan County.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that 20-year-old Thomas Leon Hollyfield, of Powhatan, was riding on a 2004 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle and speeding uphill while on a curve when he then crossed into the opposite lane of travel.

The motorcycle then collided head-on with a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze sedan, according to officials.

Hollyfield reportedly fell off the motorcycle and was taken to a local hospital, where police said he later died due to his injuries. Police said he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Officials said the driver of the Chevrolet had non-life-threatening injuries following the crash.
