Man killed in Chesterfield motorcycle crash identified as University of Richmond law student

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The man who died after a motorcycle crash in Chesterfield in early November has been identified as a University of Richmond law student who was the son of the owner of the Virginia Texas Inn restaurant franchise.

The deadly crash took place in the evening on Nov. 7, along Otterdale Road, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.

The family of the victim identified him as 23-year-old Jack Saunders, who had graduated from James Madison University in May of 2025 and had begun his first year studying law at the University of Richmond's School of Law.

In the aftermath of his death, many are mourning the loss -- his family, including his father, David Saunders, the owner of the Virginia Texas Inn restaurant franchise and the university community.

A memorial service was held for Jack Saunders on Nov. 13 at Brandermill Church, which David Saunders said was attended by more than 700 people.

To honor Jack Saunders and his legacy, his family established the Jack Saunders Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Starting in 2026, the scholarship fund will support future law students. As of reporting, it had received nearly $25,000 in donations.

David Sanders describes his son as living a life packed with adventure, scholarship and friendship.

The University of Richmond said resources were available for students who need support in the Law School building. Flags at the university were lowered to half-staff from Nov. 9 through Nov. 11 in recognition of Jack Saunders' passing.
