Man shot by two Richmond police officers during traffic stop
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A man is in the hospital after he was shot by two officers with the Richmond Police Department during a traffic stop Thursday night.
Just after 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2600 block of Melbourne Street. According to police, the vehicle they were stopping had been reported stolen.
"During the course of the traffic stop, two RPD officers discharged their service weapon, striking the driver," a police spokesperson said.
Police did not provide any information on the circumstances surrounding the officers' choice to shoot the driver.
Officers reportedly gave the driver medical attention while waiting for emergency medical personnel. That driver, an unidentified man, was taken to a local hospital with injuries "that are now considered to be non-life-threatening," according to police.
The two involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.
