Maryland man accused of involuntary manslaughter after deadly crash left Hanover brother dead

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- More than a month after a devastating crash in Caroline County left a Hanover County man dead and put his two younger brothers in the hospital, a Maryland man is facing an involuntary manslaughter charge

At about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, Virginia State Police were called to Interstate 95 South near Ladysmith Road in Caroline for report of a three-vehicle crash.

Investigators determined that 38-year-old Joseph Yost, III of Edgewater, Maryland was driving a 2017 Ford Fusion at a high rate of speed in the center lane when he struck a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro driven by 21-year-old Zane Jackson of Hanover County.

The Camaro was pushed into the right travel lane by the impact, which also rendered it and its lights disabled. It's then that a 2018 Freightliner tractor trailer crashed into the Camaro from behind.

Timothy Jackson of Hanover County previously told 8News that Zane Jackson and his two brothers, 16-year-old Tobias Jackson and 14-year-old Boaz Jackson, were driving home from an American Ninja Warrior competition in Sterling when this tragedy struck.

His understanding of the situation is that, after the first collision, his oldest son called 911.

"They [dispatch] said ‘Okay, well, we’re going to get deputies on the way -- if there’s anything else, call us back,’" Timothy Jackson told 8News. "Five seconds later, a semi rear-ended on in … that was the fatal part of the accident.”

While neither Yost or the tractor-trailer driver reported any injuries, all three brothers were seriously hurt in the accident. Zane Jackson later died at an area hospital as a result of his injuries.

“It’s a great loss,” Timothy Jackson said previously. “He [Zane] was the greatest son you could ever ask for.”

More than a month after this tragedy unfolded, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, Virginia State Police announced that Yost was taken into custody on Sunday, Nov. 22.

Yost has been indicted on two charges related to the crash, including involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving, per Virginia State Police.

At the time of his Oct. 8 interview, Timothy Jackson said Tobias had a spinal fracture, while Boaz was on a ventilator with severe head trauma. 8News is working to get an update from their father on how they are doing.
