May is American Stroke Awareness Month: Here’s how RHHD is spreading awareness
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- May is American Stroke Awareness Month and Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) is encouraging the community to learn the signs and symptoms of a stroke.
According to RRHA, a stroke happens when something blocks the blood flow to the brain or a blood vessel in the brain bursts.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), strokes are the fourth leading cause of death in Virginia next to cancer, heart disease and accidents.
“Awareness of stroke symptoms can save lives,” said RHHD Districts Director Dr. Elaine Perry. “Every minute counts after a stroke, and the sooner someone gets medical care, the better chance they have of recovery.”
When someone experiences a stroke the most important step people can take according to RHHD is calling 911 as soon as you spot signs and symptoms of a stroke.
Additionally, RHHD has a phrase to help remember the signs and symptoms of a stroke -- BE FAST:
- Balance: Loss of balance, headaches or dizziness
- Eyes: Blurred vision
- Face: One side of face is drooping
- Arm: Arm or leg weak
- Speaking: Speaking is difficult
- Time: Call 911 immediately
Although these are the common symptoms everyone is different and not every person will show all of these symptoms, in that case it's still suggested that community members call 911.
