Mayor Avula to release affordable housing plan for Richmond in January

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Mayor Danny Avula recently announced the release of an affordable housing plan for the city in January 2026.

Avula will be formally introducing the plan in mid-January, featuring what he referred to as a "comprehensive Affordable Housing Strategy" utilizing a "multi-tool approach," per a Monday, Dec. 15 release.

Those tools include the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, performance grants, a code refresh and anti-displacement measures.

"This strategy recognizes what Richmonders have told me again and again: there’s no single solution to our housing challenges," Avula said. "It will take creativity, collaboration, and commitment from all of us."

This announcement comes after Richmond faced housing struggles in 2025, including controversies surrounding plans to redevelop the public housing complex Gilpin Court under new, private ownership.

More information about Avula's plans can be found on his social media pages as well as in his Mayoral Action Plan.
