Mesh installation underway at Lee Bridge in Richmond to improve safety
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Installation has begun for a chain link mesh underneath Lee Bridge as part of an effort to improve pedestrian safety on the suspension bridge below.
According to a release from the City of Richmond, the Department of Public Works (DPW) began the installation on Aug. 11, and estimates the work will continue through November 2025.
The northbound right lane and bike lane on Lee Bridge will be closed during nighttime construction hours, but the bike lane will remain open and free of equipment when work is not being done. Additionally, there may be barrels placed on the bridge for safety.
This project is part of a larger safety initiative that intends to add an additional layer of safety for those who use the suspension bridge, below the roadway, across the James River.
The city said the mesh is not being installed as a response to any particular instance of falling debris, but is part of ongoing efforts from the DPW to reduce future risk and address aging infrastructure.
The department said it will continue to provide updates as the installation progresses.
