Minor earthquake shakes Central Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- An earthquake shook things up in Central Virginia on Friday.

At 5:52 p.m. on Friday, March 20, an earthquake rattled Central Virginia, according to StormTracker8 chief meteorologist Matt DiNardo.

Our 8News team is still working to learn exactly where the earthquake originated. However, we have received several reports from viewers in the Greater Richmond region -- including in Chesterfield and Henrico counties -- who all say they felt this quake.

Additionally, we know the event registered on both the Blacksburg and Fredericksburg seismographs.

DiNardo said that, based on seismographic data available as of the time of reporting, the earthquake appears to have been relatively minor.

Our team has also received calls from viewers who heard a loud noise in addition to the shaking. According to DiNardo, this is connected to the earthquake. Seismic events can sometimes make a loud rumble or a "boom" noise.

No additional information is available at this time. An update will be provided when possible.
