Missing 80-year-old Albemarle man with dementia could be in danger

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A missing 80-year-old Albemarle County man with dementia who was last seen walking to his mailbox on Sunday may be in danger, police say.

At about 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, the Virginia State Police issued a missing senior alert for 80-year-old Lawrence Gaines Thomas of Albemarle.

Thomas was last seen between 5 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, walking to the mailbox of his Secretary Sand Road home.

Per the Albemarle County Police Department, Thomas has dementia. Authorities have determined his disappearance poses a credible threat to his health and safety.

Thomas, pictured above, is described as a white man with brown eyes and grey hair. He is about 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. He is possibly wearing a green shirt and blue jeans.

"Community members may see a large police presence in this area while ACPD and the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office complete search and rescue operations," the Albemarle County Police Department said. "At this time, we are not coordinating or requesting volunteer search efforts. Please do not self-deploy. If the need for volunteers arises, we will share that information here. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation."
