Model Railroad Show rolls into Richmond with train displays, programs
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Model Railroad Show rolled into Richmond the weekend after Thanksgiving with train displays and train-themed programming at the Science Museum of Virginia. The Model Railroad Show at the Science Museum of Virginia began on Friday, Nov. 29, and will continue through Sunday, Dec. 1 with an entire room full of displays created by members of Virginia-based model railroad clubs. Timshel Purdum, deputy director of education at the Science Museum of Virginia, said this year is the 47th annual Model Railroad event with nine different model railroad displays in the museum's building, which was formerly a train station. "The first train left our building in 1919," Purdum said. "So, we've been here a long time, but the train stopped running in the 1970's, so we love bringing a little bit of that history back every year as we celebrate the Model Railroad event." The event features a LEGO display, blacksmith, hands-on collaborative train scene build and more. Richmond-area residents Rakesh and Bela Sood attended the event with their grandchildren on Saturday, Nov. 30. "We are absolutely delighted to be here," Bela Sood said. "It's fascinating both for the old folks and to see this through the eyes of our grandkids, and what fascinates them." Rakesh Sood said he grew up with steam trains in the Himalayas in India. He said his favorite train at the Model Railroad Show reminds him of his childhood. "I'm so amazed at how exact and fine all of the details are," Bela Sood said about the trains displayed at the event. "And how much joy it must be bringing to the people who lived near these because, for them, it's their life." The last day of the Model Railroad Show at the Science Museum of Virginia is Sunday, Dec. 1. For more information about the event or to purchase tickets, visit the museum's website.
