Montana Gold Bread Company gives 8News a taste of Mardi Gras

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Ahead of Mardi Gras on Tuesday, Montana Gold Bread Company showcased the tradition of making and enjoying king cake.

In the morning on Monday, March 3, 8News Anchors Delaney Hall and Autumn Childress spoke with Sandra Loft, manager at Montana Gold Bread Company manager about the well-loved treat.

"The history of king cakes started well over 100 years ago," Lofts aid. "They were served right at Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday, and it's a tradition that people buy them and host a big party. You cut into it, whoever gets the baby is crowned the king for Mardi Gras, and then they get to host the party the next year."

Loft explained that there are traditionally three colors for Mardi Gras: gold/yellow, green and purple.

At Montana Gold Bread Company, king cakes are made like a big cinnamon roll. The dough is shaped into a rectangle and then slathered with butter and cinnamon sugar, then rolled and shaped into a circle.

Instead of baking the plastic baby into the cake, Loft said Montana Gold includes a baby on the side for patrons to add.

This year, Loft said the shop has received a record number of orders.

To keep up with the shop, visit it at 3543 West Cary Street or check out its website.
