Multiple staff members arrested at Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- Several staff members were arrested at Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Wednesday following an ongoing investigation into possible elder abuse and neglect at the facility. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, five staff members at Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, located at 831 Ellerslie Avenue, were arrested following an ongoing investigation into possible elder abuse and neglect at the facility. On Oct. 5, the Colonial Heights Police Department received a complaint of possible elder abuse and neglect from the Virginia Department of Adult Protective Services regarding a recently discharged patient from the Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. According to police, Colonial Heights Detectives began an investigation, however, within a few weeks, the victim died. Police said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia was contacted by detectives and is conducting an abuse and neglect investigation. However, Colonial Heights Police Detectives, in partnership with investigators from the Office of the Attorney General's Elder Abuse Task Force and the Virginia Department of Health Professions, have continued to investigate this case to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. As a result of the joint investigation, numerous charges against multiple staff members of the Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center were obtained. On Wednesday, investigators from all three agencies, as well as representatives from the Colonial Heights Commonwealth Attorney's Office responded to the facility to make arrests and execute search warrants associated with this investigation. According to the police department, the following individuals were taken into custody without incident on Wednesday: Christine Gentry, 33, of Franklin, has been charged with: Falsifying patient records Shawanda Jeter, 46, of Richmond, has been charged with: Abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults Resisting or obstructing execution of legal process Danyell Berberich, 48, of Dinwiddie County, has been charged with: Falsifying patient records Katiema Booker, 32, of Petersburg, has been charged with: Falsifying patient records Danielle Harris, 53, of Disputanta, has been charged with: Abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults According to authorities, 13 other individuals also received outstanding warrants following the investigation. The police department said it will continue to investigate this case and the facility to identify any additional instances of inadequate care or abuse to the patient or others.
