Murder or self-defense? Virginia lawmakers react to deadly Minnesota ICE shooting

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia lawmakers are reacting after an ICE agent shot and killed an American citizen in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The victim has been identified as a 37-year-old Old Dominion University graduate, Renee Nicole Macklin Good.

Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia) said the agent who shot and killed Good should be held accountable. Warner said if an investigation determines the agent acted illegally, he should be charged.

“I’m not gonna draw any legal conclusion. I saw the image, I saw what happened. I think there needs to be a thorough investigation,” Warner said.

On the Republican side, GOP Congressman John McGuire (VA-05) called the shooting tragic and unfortunate, while adding that Good put the officers in harm's way.

“A peaceful protest is one thing, but not obeying lawful orders from a federal officer and trying to run over a federal officer, that’s wrong,” McGuire told 8News.

However, Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), who called the shooting "the murder of Good," referring to the victim's last name, sees things differently.

“I watched that video, and it was sickening. I did not see an officer who was in jeopardy of being struck by that vehicle,” said Kaine. "That’s not what I saw. Now, I haven’t seen all the video, maybe there were other videos, and they all ought to be looked at, but the video that I saw did not appear to be an officer who was in jeopardy.”

For their part, the Trump administration has defended the agent involved, saying he acted in self-defense.
