‘Never heard of anything like this’: Mechanicsville man wanted for attempted murder after domestic dispute
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Hanover County Sheriff's Office is searching for a Mechanicsville man who is currently wanted for attempted murder. Deputies have been looking for 61-year-old Keith Lamont Hubbard since the evening of Sunday, Dec. 29, but authorities say they need the public's help to track him down. Investigators say that Hubbard was identified as a suspect after he was involved in a domestic dispute that ended with one woman being seriously hurt and deputies on the hunt for more answers. Hubbard is a black man around 6 feet tall and weighs around 180 pounds. Investigators with the Hanover Sheriff's Office say he is believed to be driving a dark grey 2016 Nissan Rogue with the license plate number UDD-3073, though it is possible he has ditched the vehicle. Joe Covington and his family have lived across the street from the home where the Sunday night incident happened for most of his life. He told 8News that what unfolded behind closed doors was a shock to him and most of the nearby neighbors. “Cops were blocking the road over, there were two squad cars,” Covington said, describing the scene. “There was tape from the fence over there beside the house... people coming in and out, people all over that property there... it's kind of unsettling, you know, having something like that happen so close to, you know, where you grew up and where your family lives.” Deputies arrived at a home on Kiwi Lane at around 5:42 p.m. on Sunday evening after they had received calls about a domestic dispute. When they arrived, they found a 61-year-old woman with serious injuries. Sergeant Steve Wills with the Hanover Sheriff's Office said the woman -- who is not being identified -- is expected to be okay. “My understanding is she went through a few surgeries overnight, she is expected to make a recovery at this point, although I think there's a lot of things we are still trying to determine," Wills said. "And then the injuries themselves, they're going to cause permanent disfigurement." Deputies are continuing the search for Hubbard as a suspect. ”Although we believe he is responsible for a heinous act last night, overall, we believe that was a specific situation and target.” Wills said. “This was not a random act of violence. We do not believe that he is a potential threat to the majority of the community." Investigators are not yet revealing how the woman was hurt or if there was a weapon used. When Hubbard is found, he will be charged with aggravated malicious wounding and attempted murder. “These things do happen a couple of times a year. But, yeah, I don't think we generally see a lot of attempted murder,” Wills said. “So, this is a rare occurrence for sure... shakes things up quite a bit. It's very disturbing.” The woman is still recovering from her injuries. Wills said that if you see Hubbard do not try to approach him, call 911 instead.
