Official says after-action report will follow Belle Isle shooting investigation in Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A spokesperson for the City of Richmond confirmed that there will be an after-action report following the investigation into the Belle Isle shooting that injured a park ranger. On Tuesday, Jan. 28, a spokesperson for the city said the investigation into the shooting of a park ranger at Belle Isle in Richmond will be part of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities' after-action report. "Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is conducting an internal review to assess the incident," said a spokesperson for the city. "This investigation is a critical piece for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities after action report. The safety of our Urban Park Rangers, visitors and the communities we serve remains our top priority, and we will continue to evaluate and improve training, policies, and procedures.” At 1:42 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, Richmond Police received a call for the report of a person shot at Belle Isle. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an Urban Park Ranger who told police that he had been interacting with a man in a wooded area of the park. When the park ranger offered him services for shelter, the man reportedly produced a firearm and shot the ranger in the chest. According to police, the ranger was wearing a bulletproof vest and sustained minor injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. While they did this, officers asked anyone who approached the crime scene to leave so that officers could conduct a proper search. Authorities said additional officers and detectives were on hand in the area to thoroughly search Belle Isle. Police described the suspect as a Black man who is believed to be in his late 30s, standing at 5'11" tall with unkempt hair and a patchy beard. He was said to be wearing a black winter coat and dirty clothes. On Thursday, Jan. 30, 8News reached out to the Richmond Police Department for any updates on the investigation. The department said Major Crimes detectives are continuing to investigate and they are "not yet able to provide an update to the public."
