Overwhelming majority of Central Virginia ICE detainees continue to be non-criminals, data shows

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The overwhelming majority of people detained at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers in Central Virginia continue to not be considered violent criminals, according to ICE data as of late January.

Virginia houses two detention centers -- the Caroline Detention Center in Caroline County and the Farmville Detention Center in Prince Edward County. In addition, Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County agreed with ICE to temporarily house its detainees in May 2025.

Since President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, he has promised to put an end to “migrant crime” in America. He continues to claim that immigrants are committing crimes at a high rate.

According to TRAC Immigration, though, as of Jan. 25, the vast majority of those detained by ICE on a national level are people who have not been convicted of a crime. TRAC Immigration found that many of those with convictions committed only minor offenses, like traffic violations.

As of Jan. 22, ICE's data shows that the Farmville Detention Center held 714 total detainees, with about 76% having no criminal convictions.

In addition, as of that same date, the Caroline Detention Center held a total of 343 detainees, with roughly 68% having no criminal convictions, according to ICE's data.

Across both facilities, 73% of detainees have no criminal convictions.
